Chapter Five

Matt was grateful for Cole and Ryan’s presence. It had been painful to know that Damien, who he’d always loved and cared for, could do this to them. Cole was so thoughtful he’d started going through his computer files looking for images of Thomas, Matt, Rosie, and their family members.

“Let’s not think about Damien. Or that witch, Lorelei,” Cole said. He convinced Thomas to take his Zoom call. “It will get your mind off things. I’ll put the groceries away. Ry, you go with Matt to pick up Rosie from school.”

“I want to go too,” Daphne said, racing to the kitchen to retrieve her shoes. She’d dutifully removed them and put them inside the kitchen door. She’d also remembered the local custom of pointing the shoes toward the street to keep bad luck out of the house and good fortune inside it.

They’d become so Hawaiian, not wearing street shoes in the house.

Matt was glad one of them was making decisions. Cole had to put Matt’s keys into his hands. Ryan said, “Pull yourself together, Matty.”

And Ryan was right. He kissed Thomas goodbye and tried as hard as he could to keep a smile on his face when he drove up to the school. He joined the long line of parents, and probably a few nannies too, who waited at the parents’ entrance to collect their offspring.

Not for the first time, Matt was grateful for the school’s strict security. Matt had a special pass on his dashboard to pick up Rosie. His ID was always scrutinized against the one school officials referred to on mini iPads, and security guards supervised each child leaving the campus.

Even though they knew Matt by now, nobody took shortcuts.

A sudden flash of worry gripped him. What if Lorelei and Damien came to Hawaii and tried to kidnap Rosie from school. He gripped the steering wheel.

Relax. They have no idea where she goes to school. I hope.

“Has Damien called you?” he asked Ryan.

“Nope. The number Cole had for him has been disconnected.”

“Bummer.” Matt’s anxiety went up a few notches. “Do you know if he ever asked Cole about Rosie?” he asked Ryan.

Ryan shook his head. “Not once. He didn’t even ask about Daphne. He’s stayed a lot with us in the past.”

“I remember. You were always putting him up. Him and that idiot, Christian.”

Ryan grimaced. “Don’t remind me about him. But Damien went on and on about how much he missed staying with us, from what Cole told me, but he never once asked about her. Or our lives. He never asked about you or Rosie, either.”

Matt tried not to stress. He kept checking in the rearview mirror for any vehicles that might be following him. Right now, plenty were because they were all in line. Waiting.

And there was his little girl. It wasn’t too difficult smiling since he’d brought Ryan and Daphne with him.

“I’m gonna hide and surprise her,” Daphne said, scrambling to the floor of the backseat. Matt got out and grabbed Rosie, hugging her.
